Scarlet Street

If you love Film Noir, and detest the happy endings so often attached, then this is the film for YOU. Scarlet Street, dir by Fritz Lang, starring Edward G. Robinson, Joan Bennett, and (Dangerous) Dan Duryea. Certainly one of the greatest of the genre, and graciously and informatively co-hosted by the Czar of Noir, Eddie Muller. Gaslight

TONIGHT ON CHEESE THEATRE:
Sorry it’s been a while since we posted, but a new job, along with an uncooperative computer, has limited my energy.
Tonight, a film few have seen – GASLIGHT.
I mean the original, 1940 British version. Most people haven’t seen this, because MGM bought up every available copy in advance of the 1944 release of their version. Both versions are in the PD, but most people have seen the Ingrid Bergman/Charles Boyer version, so we decided to air this one. Some argue it’s better. I will say that it’s at least very good.

The Dark Hour

TONIGHT ON CHEESE THEATRE:
The Dark Hour, from 1936. You wouldn’t recognize any of the actors, except maybe Hedda Hopper, that red-baiting-for-profit co-conspirator of J. Edgar Hoover. But hey, it’s a good murder mystery, featuring two good imitations of the Koch Brothers as victims – so that’s good, right?

Cold Sweat

THIS WEEK ON CHEESE THEATRE:

Rarely do we get this many stars on our show. Charles Bronson, Liv Ullmann, James Mason and Jill Ireland all star in “Cold Sweat,” a movie shot in France. Like all Bronson movies, this one has fight scenes, chase scenes, and lots of Bronson attitude. Besides, it’s in COLOR.

INTERNATIONAL CRIME

THIS WEEK ON CHEESE THEATRE:
Comcast 26 at 10 PM on Saturday night (in Marin). This week’s offering is INTERNATIONAL CRIME, from 1938. A decent mystery, dressed up with the character of Lamont Cranston, aka THE SHADOW. In this version, he has no supernatural powers, no secret identity. But he does have a daily news column and other things that keep him busy. This flick also has Astrid Allwyn, a lesser-known actor(ess) who previously appeared on Cheese Theatre, in NO HANDS ON THE CLOCK. Yeah, I’m sure you remember THAT!
